Des Moines roofing companies: what to expect from us
Iowa has no roofing license, the metro gets hailed on every spring, and a new set of trucks with out-of-state plates shows up after each storm. That combination is why this page exists: what the state actually requires of a roofer, what we do on every job, and where in the 515 we work.
Registered, insured, and here in October
Iowa is one of the states that does not license roofers. What it requires is that any construction contractor register with the Iowa Division of Labor, part of Iowa Workforce Development, and show proof of workers' compensation and unemployment insurance as part of that registration. Out-of-state contractors also have to post a surety bond. There's no skills test behind it, so registration proves only that a company exists and has its insurance in order. But it takes ten minutes to check on the state's contractor search, and the crews that haven't bothered are telling you how long they plan to stay.
We're registered, and we carry general liability and workers' compensation. Certificates go to you before a ladder goes up. Ask every roofer for the same; a worker who falls off your roof without coverage becomes a claim against your homeowners policy.
Iowa also has a law written for storm season: a roofing contractor may not pay, rebate or promise to cover your insurance deductible, and if the insurer denies the claim you can cancel the contract. The best roofers in Des Moines don't need to work around it.
What every job includes
Inspection from the attic and the roof, not a satellite measurement and a driveway conversation. A one-page written scope, itemized, with the shingle product named and the warranty in years, good for 30 days. Ice-and-water membrane to the code line at the eaves and in every valley, six nails per shingle, new flashing, ventilation sorted while the deck is open. A permit in the price. And when a $300 pipe boot or another four winters is the right answer, that's the answer you get.

In the city: Beaverdale, Drake, Sherman Hill, Highland Park, the east side, South of Grand, Merle Hay and Easter Lake.
North: Ankeny, Johnston, Grimes, Polk City and Bondurant, where roof work is mostly 2000s subdivisions taking hail on open ground.
